Best Affordable Makeup Brushes

I remember when I first started wearing makeup, I’d pack on eyeshadow with the sponge applicator that came with the product. I did the same for blush and powder foundation…oh the horror! I had no idea that using the proper tools could and would completely change the way makeup looked on my face!

I eventually joined the rest of the makeup junkies of the world and bought MAC brushes. Holy moly…talk about a game changer! My eyeshadow was blending so much better than it used to, and I found the cakey foundation of the past now went on seamlessly with a proper brush. During this time, I was a full-time University student living on my own, and working a full-time job. I didn’t have the funds to support my new found makeup brush addiction! Enter in, the power of the Internet and finding affordable alternatives! I have tried so many brands of makeup brushes it is a little absurd. There are some that are no doubt worth their weight in gold, but there are others that are way over priced and not remotely worth your money. On the flip side, there are some ridiculously affordable brands of makeup brushes on the market that I hate to say, you get what you pay for. Having said that, I’m going to share with you my top three affordable makeup brush brands.

  1. Morphe

These are incredible affordable brushes. Like most of my makeup products, I was introduced to Morphe through Jaclyn Hill. Basically anything she recommended I bought! At the time, Morphe was only available online and shipping to Canada wasn’t cheap. However, the price difference even with the exchange rate and shipping was worth purchasing. And now, Morphe products can be bought at Ulta and Sephora! I find these brushes do the work for you. You don’t need to apply a lot of pressure; using a nice light hand will apply the product nicely on your skin. My go-to brushes for eyeshadows are the M441 ($8 CAD) and M433 ($8 CAD), and one of my favourite foundation brushes is the M439 ($19 CAD).

  2. Sigma

Another Jaclyn Hill recommendation! This is another brand that I use every single day. These were the first makeup brushes that I had ever purchased online, and I was so happy I did! At the time, they had a store at the Mall of America, so anytime we took a road trip to Minneapolis, I made sure to stop in and stock up! It’s so great that there are so many retailers all over the world that carry Sigma products now!  Similar to Morphe, these brushes apply your makeup without any patchiness, and the blendability is amazing. My brushes barely shed and have lasted me for years. My favourite brushes are the E40 ($17 USD), E25 ($16 USD) and the F80 ($20 USD).

  3. Makeup Geek

Can you guess where I first heard of Makeup Geek products? Yep Jaclyn Hill again! She was doing a Kim Kardashian inspired makeup look and used three eyeshadows from Makeup Geek to create her look. Guess what I bought? All three eyeshadows. Yes ok fine I was a little obsessed! Once they launched their brushes, I knew I had to try them! All of Makeup Geek’s products are cruelty-free, and similar to the products above, work so well to blend your makeup. My favourite brushes are the Chiseled Cheek Brush ($17.99 USD), Angled Contour Brush ($9.99 USD) and the Pointed Crease Brush ($8.49 USD).
